A Glimpse into The Gray
Filmmakers Valentin Sandoval and John Leo De Frank presents a short web-series of four vignettes about a 20-something generation of border dwellers on the frontera of US/Mexico and their struggles of defining one's self in the early years of the new millennia.
The Gray is an attempt at capturing an ominous metaphysical state that can be generalized
within the context of a color palette - Gray. It's what occurs in a borderland where young people from different socioeconomic classes are directly and indirectly linked to each other and how those relationships homogenize into the metaphorical ether of young minds plotting and puzzling the trajectory of their lives. Although specific to the culture and essence of the region, the themes of these poetic vignettes are shared by the 20-some generation worldwide.
The story unfolds via a series of vignettes, elliptical rather than linear segments that construct
our lucid and poetic narrative. A cast of characters that lives off of the residual, cultural, and
allegorical ramifications of the early years of the new millennia-with regards to the dialogue
regarding the attempt to define generation X and the exciting potentials of this New America
and how they define the undefined movement that will trickle down to
generations to come.
This consciousness is told through the eyes of the dwellers of Chuco Town & J-Town, (El Paso/Juarez) borderplex, an otherwise ostracized and disregarded territory dipped in the stigma
of cartel violence and the wild west delusions of cowboys on horseback and rolling tumbleweeds. A very unique dynamic plays off and within the spirit of these people, developing here in this beautiful-raw, photolytic territory of what is the Frontera.
